The Association of College and Research Libraries defines information literacy as “the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.

Librarians at Adelphi University Libraries are available to provide customized instruction for classes or for individuals. The Libraries provide semester-long support to assist with research assignment development, skills assessment, research readiness, and more. Our goal is to equip learners with the information literacy skills necessary to become effective lifelong consumers of information.

When requesting information literacy instruction for your class, please keep the following points in mind:

  • Schedule an intervention by a librarian at the students’ point of need in their research projects. Numerous studies prove that the best information literacy instruction occurs when students need to learn new skills in order to complete a research assignment. A general overview of library resources is rarely effective and is not ideal.
  • Request your instruction at least two weeks prior to the date you would like. This will allow the librarian sufficient time to develop learning outcomes and activities aligned with your syllabus and assignments.
  • Plan to be present during the information literacy instruction, and actively participate along with your students. Your students will be more likely to trust the librarian’s expertise if you learn and participate with them.
