About the Adelphi Libraries

| Services for Individuals with Disabilities

Swirbul Library is committed to providing information and instruction in support of the educational, research, cultural, and student life programs of Adelphi University. It is our policy to make every reasonable attempt to ensure access to collections and services to all, including persons with disabilities. The purpose of this page is to make patrons aware of the various materials, equipment, and services which Swirbul Library can provide.

Building Access
There is ramp access from the designated disability parking spaces in Parking Lot 7 to the Swirbul Library front door, which is button-operated and power-assisted. All public service floors are accessible by elevators, which are equipped with braille button labels and emergency telephones.

Restroom
A unisex restroom with adaptive equipment is located on the first floor behind the Access Services Desk.

Specialized Equipment
Two Optelec Clearview 500 closed-circuit televisions, a computer with Zoomtext software, and a scanner are housed in the room designated Reading and Technology in the Reference Department on the second floor. The Clearview 500 is a full-color magnification system, intended for the visually impaired, which is able to display an enlarged image of any document or photograph placed on its table’s surface. Zoomtext is a program which is capable of enlarging the images displayed on the computer's monitor, as well as reading aloud any visible text. There are also two computers on the second floor, in the back of the Information Commons Lab which offer MAGic. MAGic is a magnification and speech synthesizing program similar to Zoomtext. Both MAGic and Zoomtext are intended for individuals who are visually impaired or reading disabled. There is a computer with a large monitor in the Sager Lab on the second floor, intended for those with only slight visual impairment. Also, a hand-held magnifier may be borrowed for in-house use from any public services desk. There is a TTY phone in the lobby for the hearing impaired.

Services
Reference assistance is available at the Reference Desk and help in retrieving materials may be requested from the Access Services Desk. The Copy Center will assist individuals with special needs with photocopying. These service areas are on the first floor. In addition, any Swirbul Library staff member will accommodate reasonable requests from those that need help or will provide direction for assistance.
