The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (DNB) is a collection of 56,000 biographies of those who shaped the history of the British Isles , from earliest times to 2004. In addition, DNB's 10,000 illustrations, researched in partnership with The National Portrait Gallery, is the largest collection of national portraiture ever published.

This database was chosen in honor of William Shakespeare's birthday April 23, 1564
