This volume and the 1876 edition of Leaves of Grass formed the first edition of Whitman's Complete Works . Although no portrait is mentioned on the title page, a frontispiece page has been pasted in with the caption: "Photo'd from life, Sept., '72, Brooklyn , N. Y. by G. F. E. Pearsall, Fulton St ." No photograph is mounted on the page; however a print of an 1890 portrait by Gutekunst has been inserted.
