Walt Whitman, 1819-1892.

November Boughs . Philadelphia : D. McKay, 1888.

Gift of the Friends of the Library

November Boughs, a slender book of 140 pages, contained a very important long preface called "A Backward Glance O'er Travel'd Roads," which combined two articles that Whitman had published in 1884 and 1887. He had thus spent several years in a thoughtful summing up of his literary theories and practices, and here he gave the frankest and most judicial discussion of them he had ever achieved.

From G. W. Allen's The Solitary Singer , 1967.
