Leaves of Grass. Facsimile edition of the 1855 text. Portland, ME: T. B. Mosher; W. F. Gable, 1919.
Gift of Emory Holloway
"This facsimile edition consists of 400 copies as follows and the type distributed: 250 copies medium 8vo printed on Old Stratford white wove paper, in dark green cloth, stamped to match the original edition."
This is the first facsimile edition of Leaves of Grass, first issue. The Facsimile Society edition of 1939 and the Eakins Press edition of 1966 are also part of Adelphi's collection. It is unusual that Whitman's name does not appear on the title page, only on the verso in the copyright statement. However the viewer is greeted on the facing page by an engraved frontispiece portrait of Whitman by Samuel Hollyer after a daguerreotype by Gabriel Harrison. (see below)
