Richard Maurice Bucke, 1837-1902.
Walt Whitman . Philadelphia : D. McKay, 1883.
Bucke's book is not limited to a biographical sketch of Whitman. He reprints the impassioned pamphlet, The Good Gray Poet , writtten in 1865 by Whitman's friend, William Douglas O'Connor. His "vindication" was prompted by Secretary of the Interior Harlan's dismissal of Whitman after reading from a working copy of Leaves of Grass which was discovered in Whitman's office desk. O'Connor was instrumental in having Whitman transferred to a new position in the Attorney General's office.
Bucke also includes a reprint of the letter from the Boston District Attorney which "suggests" that Whitman's publisher, Osgood, supress the 1881-82 edition.
