Emory Holloway, 1885-1977. Free and Lonesome Heart; the secret of Walt Whitman. New York: Vantage Press, 1960. In a review of the book appearing in American Literature (1960) Edward F. Grier states: It is by no means impossible that Whitman fathered a child, but John Whitman Wilder, as Whitman's son, is the result of one of those misfortunes that every scholar dreads. Professor Holloway missed a document in the Feinberg Collection, since published, which makes it clear that Wilder was the illegitimate son of Whitman's widowed sister-in-law and had no real right to the name he assumed.
