Commentary: Finished in 1819 during Cobbett's second sojourn in America, The American Gardener "was intended for the American farmer, who, however admirable in other respects, neglected the beauty and utility of the garden." Cobbett published the book in 1821 after his return to England and subsequently revised it as The English Gardener (1828). Both titles have been frequently reprinted, The American Gardener as recently as 2003.
